A woman who prefers to remain anonymous, but is now clean said “I tried stopping for many years and was unsuccessful” She wasn’t willing to take the suggestion’s given to here at the serval treatment centers she had attended. She thought that having children would slow down her using and it would help, but she never completely stopped. She would cut down for short periods of time but eventually she would completely lose control and use heavier than she had before she tried cutting down. After three children and two marriages she found herself alone and strung out. Her husband took the kids, she got evicted from her apartment and ended up on the couch of a woman’s house that she met in a 12 step program. She was kicking on the couch and couldn’t take it anymore so in a fit of desperation to buy prescription painkillers to ease the withdrawal symptoms. She attempted to cash some stolen checks and was arrested in front of the store she tried to cash them. Charged with 2 felonies, her judge sentenced her to 9 months of treatment and it changed her life. Drugs had consumed her life for 25 years. She lost everything in her life that she loved and at the end of her using she was all alone. In treatment she learned how to let go and was taught new methods of coping with life. She slowly started working to get her family back. Early in her recovery she had an opportunity to get a job at law firm filing paperwork. At 2 years clean she decided to go back to school to become a paralegal. She’s has now been sober for 10 years and has remarried.
