Recovery centers offer a broad continuum of care that will help suffering addicts address specific areas of concern. Some examples of different treatment options are: intensive outpatient or IPO, Inpatient    either a co-ed facility or one that caters to a specific gender, short term (1-6 months) or long term (6-18 months) etc., It is in your best interest to speak with a professional that can help you determine what your specific needs may be. The majority of treatment centers will work with private insurance. If you are not certain if your insurance covers drug and alcohol treatment you can contact us at our toll free number for a free confidential benefits check, or by contacting your insurance provider directly.

Alcohol and drug addiction is the 9th leading cause of death in the United States, in 2014 Heroin and opioids were responsible for over 25,000 accidental fatal overdoses in the U.S. alone. Over 190 being directly linked to Nassau County. Oceanside is just one of the cities in Nassau County that has been plagued by this epidemic. The situation has become so dire Nassau county Executive Edward P. Mongona launched a free public Narcan training program in September of 2012 the goal is to teach citizens the signs of opioid overdose to reverse the effects. This preventive measure is a step in the right direction and seems to be making a difference. However, it does not treat the disease of Addiction as a whole. We believe as well as many other addiction professionals that the disease of addiction can only be overcome by two key components; total abstinence, and a complete change of thinking. Abstinence from all mood or mind altering substances is by far the most difficult aspect of recovery. Without outside professional help or support it can be impossible for many.

The story of recovery for many recovering addicts only begins when they put down the drugs. She had finished her stay at a residential heroin and alcohol treatment program and was graduating. In the lobby, her husband and son were waiting for her, but the expression on her husband’s face told the whole story. The look of “Ok, it’s time to take the addict home.” It took her a long time to understand that the damage done in our active addiction can take years to repair.

Heroin addiction destroys families. Even after the drugs have been taken away, there is still much work to be done in order to repair all of the hurt and pain caused in our active addiction. Concern turns to anger and resentment, a “look what you’ve done to us mentality, “and no one has to discuss this you can see it on their faces. The family suffers as well as the addict but the play different roles in the disease of addiction. She gathered up her things and signed out. there was a short reunion but the moment was not joyous, no kisses no, “I love you”. There is help for the families as well different 12 step organizations.

In treatment she received compassion and understanding. She was with others like her who also suffered from the disease and understood the distorted feelings and thinking. There is a human connection on a deep level when addict communicate and help each other stay clean. And although treatment was only temporary, the people she met and connected with have become a part of her support network and are becoming lifelong friends.
