Deaths from drug overdoses have jumped in almost every single county across the United States and Suffolk is no exception. Deaths from overdoses are reaching levels similar to the H.I.V. epidemic at its peak and prescription painkillers and heroin have been the main drivers of these overdoses. The death rate from drug overdoses is climbing at a much faster rate than any other causes of death, going from 9 per 100,000 in 2003 to 15 per 100,000 in 2014. Cutchogue is no exception to what has been occurring around the rest of the United States and although it has a small population, about 3,400 people, it too has seen a rise in drug overdoses. The situation in Long Island has been so bad that recently a drug has been distributed called Narcan – a drug that is used to prevent or reverse a heroine overdose – to people who are close to addicts. The availability of Narcan has helped reduce the number of fatal drug overdoses however it has done nothing to prevent drugs from coming into Long Island and it has not been a deterrent for people who are using heroine.

With drugs being so readily available in Suffolk County it has led to a rise in crimes being committed in areas like Cutchogue. Cutchogue being a smaller town has not been hit hard by major drug dealers like some of the surrounding towns have however they have still been majorly affected by the affects. In July of 2015, four women in their early 20’s were on a wine tour when their limousine was T-boned, killing them all and injuring 5 others. The driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash. There was also a report that detailed how heroine use by teens in Suffolk County was rising. This was released after a 23-year-old woman was found in her hotel room after overdosing on heroine. The report detailed how it was important to educate teenagers and young adults to put a stop to this epidemic however the number of overdoses does not seem to be slowing down.

Cutchogue could easily become another example of what occurs when drugs are easily accessible in a small town in America. Right now it is more important than ever to make sure that resources are for drug and alcohol treatments are available for anyone who needs them. The reports and statistics are scary, however there is nothing more impactful than seeing a loved one fall victim to drugs or alcohol. That being said addiction does not have to keep taking the lives of our loved ones and addiction can be treated now better than any point in history. There are more ways than ever before to receive treatment for drug addiction and alcoholism. If you or a loved one is struggling with addiction, please call us immediately for a consultation.
