First and foremost, heroin and other opioids are the number one cause of fatal overdoses in the United States. According to US News, heroin use in Americans aged 18-25 has increased over 100 percent from 2002 to present day. For Americans 26 ad older, opioid use had increased roughly 60 percent. Drug use in the United States and in particular Long Island are rising at unprecedented rates with no signs of slowing down. As of today, the number of fatal overdoses has doubled since 2010. The situation has become so desperate local authorities in Suffolk County have begun to supply Narcan, an anti-opiate drug aimed at reducing potential overdoses. Although Narcon has been successful in mitigating overdoses, the fight against drug trafficking and non-fatal overdoses still loom. The drug epidemic in myriad of drug busts, fatal overdoses, and torn families have been the tragic tale of Long Island for over a decade now.

In Northport alone heroin busts have doubled, while arrests for driving under the influence on drugs have tripled. Northport police report drug arrests are 9 times higher than they were in 2011. Hitting the third straight year with more than 100 fatal overdoses, Suffolk county has spurred police departments to form an “overdose task force” responsible for thoroughly investigating every single heroin overdose.

Just last November, Northport police helped seize over 50 bags of heroin and roughly 20,000 dollars in cash from the alleged distributer. Police arrested couple Shamari Williams and Aliza Durante, local Northport residents leaving behind a 5-month-old child. Both Williams and Durante are being charged with multiple drug and weapons charges. Coinciding with the stark rise in drug use is the increase in violent crime. Addicts in need to get their next fix all to often turn to violent measures. Just last year during a routine traffic stop, a local Suffolk county resident assaulted a police officer attempting to remove his gun form his holster. Law enforcement eventually subdued the suspect discovering heroin, cocaine, and “Molly”.

Northport is becoming a classic example of a small American town falling victim to the current drug epidemic. These drugs infesting the cities and suburbs are deeply affecting families on every level. Although the statistics are astonishing, every single person suffering from drug and alcohol addiction still has reason for hope. Due to recent studies, advancement in medicine, and general knowledge surrounding addiction, treatment success is at an all time high. Addiction doesn’t need to continue to take the ones we hold so dear.

Options for treatment are more and better than ever before. So please, if you’re currently suffering from addiction or know anyone who is, you owe it to yourself to seek out help. Do not hesitate to call our hotline immediately for a free consultation.
