Smithtown is a community grappling with the dangers of drug and alcohol addiction. Heroin has killed a record number of residents on Long Island in the last two years. Teenage heroin use has exploded in the suburbs in what is being described as an epidemic on New York’s island. A deadly one. Heroin arrests on Long Island by the DEA are up 163% in just the last year. Smithtown is just one of the many suburbs on Long Island being affected by the influx of the drugs coming into the island. Drug and alcohol abuse is harmful to any resident in Smithtown. The rise of crime due to the insurgence of heroin in Smithtown is a real concern. A Smithtown heroin dealer was arrested in a major drug bust for allegedly selling heroin to local residents as part of a drug ring which spanned from Queens to Suffolk County. It was estimated about 15,000 bags of heroin per week were sold in Suffolk County during the DEA’s criminal investigation.

Addiction is defined as a chronic, relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use despite harmful consequences. It is considered a brain disease because drugs change the brain, they change its structure and how it works. Many individuals battling this disease feel the stigma of being an addict and being shunned by society, but those dealing with addiction should be aware that it is a disease, and with treatment they can overcome the pain and stigma of the disease known as addiction.

The first time Chris shot up heroin he was scared to do it himself so his friend did it for him. Chris, a resident of Smithtown was stealing money from his parents, breaking into homes, and robbery to fund his addiction. Chris is now 17 and entered into a long term substance abuse program for youths. He initially tried outpatient treatment, however after three failed attempts he entered into an inpatient program. In the program he has nothing to distract him as cell phones, personal televisions and computers are not allowed. The teens work and take leadership positions among their peers. The primary focus is to have each teen take responsibility for their own behavior. Chris says he believes that his 13 months at the program has saved his life. He now has found different outlets to handle his emotions besides getting high. Chris is now excited about his future.
