There have been as many ways that people have attempted to battle drug addiction for as long as addiction has plagued mankind. Addiction is a terrible and deadly condition that affects millions of people across the world every year. There is hope though, and no one has to die from the disease of addiction. Drug rehabilitation centers have become the gold standard for treating drug and alcohol addiction.
There are a number of things to consider before being admitted to treatment. Everybody has very different needs for drug rehabilitation, but what is most important to know is that there is a form of drug of treatment that will work for you and that you do not have to live with drug and alcohol addiction any longer.
Drug rehabilitation centers are facilities whose purpose is to get drug addicts and alcoholics into a safe environment where they can begin the process of healing from drug and alcohol addiction. In early recovery, it is important for the addict or alcoholic to not only stop abusing drugs and alcohol, but also to start cultivating the tools needed for long term recovery. In treatment, this process begins. Patients begin to develop a stronger understanding of their condition, understand the effects of long term drug use on the body, and form a discharge plane in order to maintain a long lasting a successful recovery.
One of the largest benefits of treatment centers, is that they give patients the opportunity to address the underlying cause of addiction, and therefore learn how to prevent relapse. More than 80% of addicts that were admitted into drug treatment last year were also diagnosed concurrently with a mental or mood disorder, many of whom were unaware that any sort of condition was present. Some of the more common conditions that are also treated in drug rehabilitation facilities include depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and a variety of eating disorders. Drug abuse and addiction is often the result of other serious issues, and unless these other issues are addressed, recovery from active addiction will be far more difficult, if not impossible.
Treatment centers use a variety of therapeutic methods and approaches to treat addiction, as no two addicts are the same. Some programs are as short as 28 days while others can be much longer, sometimes keeping patients in their continuum of care for over a year. There are not many people who are admitted into these extended one-year program, but the option is available if needed or requested. Like most aspects of addiction, this is no “one size fits all” approach and there are drug rehabilitation centers for everybody.
Traditional psychotherapy and group therapy is often implemented, but there are also a number of other options available today that are gaining traction. Some of the therapeutic techniques that have been gaining popularity across the country include music therapy, meditation, yoga, art therapy, journaling, and faith based recovery. There is no wrong way to get and stay sober. With all of the different options available, there is a program out there that is right for you. All of this methods help the addict or alcoholic to become more in tune with their emotions.
Before being discharged back into mainstream society, patients will work with clinical staff to formulate a relapse prevention plan. It is more important than anything else that when patients successfully complete a drug treatment program that they have the necessary resources to maintain and progress in their recovery outside of treatment. A good relapse prevention plan might include a number of different things, such as a change in living arrangements, strategies for how to deal with cravings, realizing what the patient’s triggers are, and learning how to identify feelings and emotions that could lead to relapse.
