When Addiction Hits Home: Does My Loved Need An Intervention?

It’s easy to see addiction as an abstract or distant concept. We see movies, watch TV shows, read books and consume a variety of other media that depicts addiction in a stylized, cookie-cutter fashion and ask ourselves how the people on the screen could ever wind up in that position. More and more Long Island residents are in the unenviable position of being able to answer this question. The truth is that the origins of substance abuse and addiction take many forms, whether it’s economical, trauma-related, the product of underlying mental illness or anything else. When we finally realize that a friend or family member has succumbed to chemical dependency, it can leave us feeling powerless and devastated. We have to realize, however, that we’re more empowered than we know to bring our loved one back from the depths of life-threatening addiction.

When addiction enters our lives and threatens to destroy our families, it’s important to act as quickly as possible to mitigate damage and help our loved one overcome substance abuse. One of the most effective ways to do this is through professional intervention. The intervention process usually entails a group of concerned loved ones and families assembling for the purposes of convincing their addicted loved one to seek treatment. Many are reluctant to rely on a professional interventionist, because they don’t want to let a stranger in on their personal problems. It’s important to remember, however, that professional interventionists can arrange treatment, keep the process moving and can serve as an objective and detached voice during what is bound to be an emotionally charged process.

An intervention often represents a family’s last chance to help their loved one overcome addiction and reclaim their lives. Long Island Addiction Resources is committed to helping families everywhere find experienced and qualified intervention professionals to expedite this process and get the most out of it.
