The United States is seeing an unprecedented rise is alcoholism and drug use. Drugs are flooding into the states resulting in a nationwide epidemic. Heroin and other opioids are the number one cause of fatal overdoses in the United States. The rate of heroin related overdose deaths has increased roughly 300 percent between 2002 and 2013. Between this same time span the number of people addicted to heroin has doubled. Between 2008 and 2011 there were about 1.1 million emergency room visits for drug poisoning. Heroin and other opiates certainly don’t discriminate, affecting the rich and the poor, the old and the young. However young adults are being affected by the drug epidemic more than any other demographic, estimating a 100 percent increase in heroin use in ages 18-25. In effort to mitigate fatal overdoses, Long Island authorities have distributing Narcon, an anti-opiate aimed to counter fatal overdoses. Narcon has been a success to a certain extent in that the persisting problems of drug trafficking and non-fatal overdoses continue.

Due to the influx of drugs from South America, the east coast is bearing the brunt of the issue. New York in particular is seeing the largest rise in heroin and other opioid use than ever before. The drugs are finding their way into the city invariably being distributed into the suburbs, and into small towns like Port Jefferson. Drugs are becoming readily available and increasingly easier to acquire for anyone who is looking. Countless drug related arrested, DWI’s, and violent crimes have been the recent story of Port Jefferson. Just last January, Suffolk county police apprehended two suspects seizing 730 grams of cocaine, 318 grams of heroin, 36 grams of oxycodone, and $200,000 in cash. The suspects, father and son, will face criminal charges and probable life sentences in prison.
Recovering addict and Port Jefferson resident Brett exclaimed in a recent interview “I ripped through the lives of the people closest to me and became a shell of the person I had been. I welcomed death openly”. From the depths of despondency Brett overcame his addiction and now works in a hospitals cancer center for children. A now sober Brett believes “the message here is that recovery is possible. Even for a person as hopeless as myself.”
Port Jefferson is turning into an example of drugs infecting a small town in America. Although the statistics are startling, anyone suffering from addiction must still remain optimistic. Stories like Brett’s exemplify the possibility of recovery regardless of how hopeless someone’s situation may seem.
