According to US News, heroin use by adults ages 18-25 has increased over 100 percent from 2002 to 2016 and use by adults 26 and over has increased by 60 percent. This has led to heroin and other opioids becoming the number one cause of fatal overdoses in the United States. Suffolk County is seeing unprecedented rates of opioid abuse consistent with the rest of the country. The number of fatal overdoses has doubled since 2010, leading Suffolk County authorities to start distributing the anti-opiate drug Narcan to reduce the number of fatal overdoses. While this is proving to be an effective countermeasure, the number of non-fatal overdoses and rates of opioid abuse remain unchanged.

In Suffolk County, the number of heroin arrests have doubled in the last five years with police recognizing that drug-related crime has become a serious epidemic. 2016 is now the third straight year with more over 100 fatal overdoses caused by opioids. The situation is so dire that police departments formed an “overdose task force” that investigates every heroin overdose in the area.

Just last summer, Suffolk County police uncovered heroin ring operating throughout Long Island led by14 different residents of Coram, Northport, and Rocky Point. Uriel Rose and his brother Winston Rose, two members of the drug ring, received over 20,000 bags have heroin over a one month period from their supplier in the Bronx, which they distributed throughout Suffolk County. The distribution of heroin throughout Suffolk County is leading to violent crime as well, such as when an officer was assaulted during a routine traffic stop. The officer later discovered the suspect was possessing large amounts of heroin, cocaine, and MDMA.

Rocky Point has become a prime example of the drug epidemic that is plaguing suburban America. Heroin and other opioids are seeping into urban and small town America alike, with horrifying statistics and stories as proof. Although the situation may seem grim, addiction does not have to keep affecting the people we love. Due to advancements in medicine and treatment strategies, recovery is attainable for anyone suffering from addiction.

If you or a loved one is suffering from drug or alcohol addiction, you owe it to yourself to find help. Treatment is better now than ever before, so please call out hotline immediately to set up a free consultation.
