As millions of New Yorkers and other Americans prepare to celebrate with their friends and loved ones, the team at Long Island Addiction Resources wishes to extend our sincerest and most profound wishes for a happy holiday. We hope that you are able to embrace the true spirit of the holiday season and experience its true benefits. We also recognize that there are those in recovery who may be particularly vulnerable this time of year. The financial pressures, social obligations and pervasive presence of alcohol are just some of the factors that can strain resolve and render us more vulnerable to setbacks even after years of continued recovery.
There are numerous ways to insulate ourselves from the heightened risk of relapse this holiday season. We should keep the contact information of our sponsor or therapist close at hand to use in case of emergency and we shouldn’t be afraid to speak to our friends and loved ones about our concerns. The only way to truly be safe and comfortable in tense situations is to be honest with ourselves and the people around us about our limitations. If we don’t feel we’re ready to be around people we haven’t seen in a while or function comfortably in an environment where alcohol or other drugs may be present, we have the right to speak up.
The people with whom we truly we want to spend the holidays will understand that we need to put our recovery first, no matter what time of year it is. For those who feel like they need a little more help and need to re-enter treatment, Long Island Addiction Resources is standing by to provide quality options to help you or your loved one get your life back on track. Please allow us to once again reiterate our best wishes for a happy holiday season.
